The cottage was built in 1914 by Bill Mace for Frank McFarland (wife Emily Louise, son George). The McFarland house was the site of the first school on Savary. Some of its pupils included Frankie Keefer, Agnes Burnett, Irene and Allan Mace, Bill Ashworth, Jim Spilsbury, Lex McKillop, and the Anderson children Pearl, Sylvia, Jim, Andrew and Terry.
The property owners until 1917 were listed as Emily Louise McFarland and E. Collingwood.
Emily Louise McFarland became the sole owner from 1918 to 1925.
From 1930 to 1932, the property was owned by Florence Connington, Nancy Hilliam and John Hall.
The subsequent owner is listed, in 1948, as Laverne Macdonald, possibly a relative of John Hall. During her ownership, for some years in the 1950s, school principal Tom Woodcock and his wife Jenda (daughter Lillian) used the cottage.

Savary realtor Mary Semple owned the property next.
John and Judy Bowles (son Jeb) purchased the property in 1970.
In 2015 it was sold to Janis Clarke (husband Bill). The house was demolished in 2017 and a new one built.
